IHE Delft Institute for Water Education is the largest international graduate water education facility in the world and is based in Delft, the Netherlands. IHE Delft is a world-renowned knowledge center on water infrastructure, technology and sciences, and attracts high-level students and scientists from around the globe.

IHE Delft’s Core activities are:

The Institute confers fully accredited MSc degrees, and PhD degrees in collaboration with partners in the Netherlands. Since 1957 the Institute has provided graduate education to more than 23,000 water professionals from over 190 countries, and is a flagship institute in the UN-Water family. Since its inception in 1957, the Institute has provided postgraduate education to numerous professionals (engineers and scientists) almost entirely from developing/transitional countries, from over 190 countries. It has also graduated over 100 PhD candidates and executed numerous research and capacity development projects throughout the world.

IHE Delft’s Alumni community is one of IHE Delft’s most important assets. The majority of them holds senior positions in their home countries and are nationally and internationally recognized experts in their fields of expertise. IHE Delft alumni have access to and remain part of a global network, consisting of alumni, guest lecturers, experts and renowned centres of knowledge, together providing a vast source of expertise available to the sector.

IHE Delft is a partner institute of the National SENSE Research School. As an accredited institution, staff and students are now expected to follow the Netherlands Code of Conduct for Scientific Practice. IHE Delft is instrumental in the strengthening of efforts by other universities and research centers in increasing knowledge and skills of professionals working in the water sector. The Member States of UNESCO have access to the knowledge and services of IHE in human and institutional capacity-building, which is vital to their efforts in the achievement Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 6 (providing access to clean water and sanitation).

IHE Delft has broad experience in conducting large Research as well as Capacity Building projects and has a solid track record of building consortia and institutional cooperation with a variety of diversified organizations operating in the water sector in all regions of the world.

The Institute has initiated and facilitated a large number capacity development projects and knowledge networks all over the world (the Nile region, Sub-Saharan Africa, Middle-East, Asia and Latin America), building on the presence of a large number of IHE alumni and partner institutes. Both knowledge networks as well as individual capacity building projects have proven to be powerful mechanisms for building up both individual, organizational and institutional capacities as well as building and strengthening water sector partnerships.
